Tools for Managing/Scheduling resources across multiple projects Essentially, my business retails kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. We use subcontractors for installation but we keep a very tight grip on the project through to completion. It is this service, or rather our reputation for doing int well, that customers are giving us as a differentiator between us and competition. However, I have a finite number of reliable tradesmen and an ever growing list of projects, increasingly overlapping with each other. What I'm looking for are tools/principles to use to make it possible to track tasks, dependencies and resources across multiple projects. As far as I can see a Gantt chart can't hold all the information I'd need, but I may be missing a trick |

Further... I probably should have mentioned: - I'm not looking for a wealth of software features, I have MS Project 2010 but I don't really welcome the need to drill down in to individual project files to make changes. I really want a 'big picture' approach to my scheduling. - I have no need for collaboration, I'm looking for tools solely for my use. Thanks |

Hi IndulgeKBB, I think I can help you out There are a few tools that are used in project management which will be helpful. First, use a Gantt chart is a good start, but you will also want to create a Work breakdown Structure (WBS). Second, you may want to develop a project network diagram which show the dependencies between project tasks, and will help in developing a more solid timeline of completion. Third, I would strongly suggest using the project evaluation & review technique (PERT) for gaining very accurate times. If you give me 30 minutes, I could show you how to take your existing Microsoft Project software and turn it into "Microsoft Resource". This solution would allow you to quickly manage multiple projects at a high level. You can input, resources (people and/or equipment), timing and even costs. You can quickly find over-allocations (or under) and just as easy play what-if scenarios to resolve these future conflicts. email me if you would like to know more. jblack[at]pmconnection.com Put Microsoft Resource in your subject line.
