Tools for Managing/Scheduling resources across multiple projects

Please forgive my ignorance here, this may be a very basic question. Like a lot of small business owners, I manage projects but could not call myself a PM. As we grow I'm finding the challenges greater and would really appreciate a nudge in the right direction as regards useful tools or learning resources specific to my particular area of difficulty.

Essentially, my business retails kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. We use subcontractors for installation but we keep a very tight grip on the project through to completion. It is this service, or rather our reputation for doing int well, that customers are giving us as a differentiator between us and competition. However, I have a finite number of reliable tradesmen and an ever growing list of projects, increasingly overlapping with each other.

What I'm looking for are tools/principles to use to make it possible to track tasks, dependencies and resources across multiple projects. As far as I can see a Gantt chart can't hold all the information I'd need, but I may be missing a trick

Further...

I probably should have mentioned:
- I'm not looking for a wealth of software features, I have MS Project 2010 but I don't really welcome the need to drill down in to individual project files to make changes. I really want a 'big picture' approach to my scheduling.
- I have no need for collaboration, I'm looking for tools solely for my use.

Thanks

Hi IndulgeKBB,

I think I can help you out There are a few tools that are used in project management which will be helpful. First, use a Gantt chart is a good start, but you will also want to create a Work breakdown Structure (WBS). Second, you may want to develop a project network diagram which show the dependencies between project tasks, and will help in developing a more solid timeline of completion. Third, I would strongly suggest using the project evaluation & review technique (PERT) for gaining very accurate times. Go to my blog site http://pmpguy44.com and leave a comment or more preferred, contact me via email. You will see my email address, so throw a line and I will go into greater detail through email exchange.

Check out with the cloud based tool from Replicon. The tool being featured with the user friendly and calendar based interface makes it an intuitive tool to work with. Also the various modules eminently helps process the overall business management without any hassle.

If you give me 30 minutes, I could show you how to take your existing Microsoft Project software and turn it into "Microsoft Resource". This solution would allow you to quickly manage multiple projects at a high level. You can input, resources (people and/or equipment), timing and even costs. You can quickly find over-allocations (or under) and just as easy play what-if scenarios to resolve these future conflicts.

email me if you would like to know more. jblack[at]pmconnection.com Put Microsoft Resource in your subject line.
