Question PM Career Path/Growth

What career opportunities/job roles would an experienced PM look for as the next step up? I have my Masters and recently gotten my PMP certification. Id like to better understand what could be next Also a tag-on question: Do you think that making next career leap would be more feasible within the company, or if you want a career progression you should accomplish this by looking outside the company?

The next career step could be the director or vice president. And its always recommendable to switch outside the company because the chances of hike is more than inside the company.

Within Project management organization (PMO), depending on your expertise and level of experience. next step for a PM can be Senior PM (with higher profile or cost projects), program manager, or a portfolio manager.

I believe you can progress by staying with one company, if you are doing good there, and are able to get the required attention to your performance. When you move from one company to another, salary hike can be better, but you have to understand the organization culture all over again, prove your worth all over again, not to forget losing all the networking that comes with being in the same place for a long time. In the long run, one company can help you reach the heights you dream of, if you stick along with being a high performer who knows how to get recognized!

Director level position is the one that any experienced PM should look out for. Vice President is also an option but most of companies would not prefer for the same position. So director is a good approach.
