I've got an interview for a PMO/PMP role with IBM, got a few questions..

Hey guys,

I've worked for IBM Australia for 4 years and recently got an invite to a meeting regarding a PMO/PMP role that is available. I'm not too familiar with Project Management and wanted to do a bit of research before I attend the meeting, but Google only gives me a very brief overview.

So, I have a few questions.. Can anyone give me a quick rundown on what a PMO does? what are your main responsibilities? Any tips to help make my interview as successful as possible? and (if anyone is comfortable) how much money do you make?

Hi jsncrs

In a PMO you are part of a team that offers guidance and support to the project executing teams.

Tasks that a PMO will undertake are:
develop project management protocols,
provide support to project managers and project teams,
formalize process documents
establish internal standards the project team are o use.

Basically the PMO will not undertake projects directly, however they develop all the systems that a project team will utilize to execute a project.

Basically PMO offers the management services of project to be carried out at a respective level. So the main role is to break the projects into small tasks, assign the same to sub ordinates, look at the status of the ongoing task. It might be on individual basis or team basis. Depends......

Hi,

Assuming that you are new to this field, let me explain that PMO is a department in an organization that is formed of project managers, program managers etc. PMP is a certification for project managers that universally gives them the recognition that they qualify to work as a project manager. Some organizations ask for PMP certified. I am noticing it is becoming the norm now a days.

Instead of describing what a project manager does, let me point you to my blog posts on the topic

Hope this helps! All the best!
