Future in Project Management

Hello everyone,
I would like to get some opinions on things that I can do to better prepare myself for my next career in project management.

My background:
I have an A.S. in Mechanical Drafting which I earned after I graduated high school years ago. I then enlisted in the Coast Guard (aviation) and have been doing that ever since, and I'm planning on getting out of the Coast Guard in 18 months from now(February,2016).
I will also be earning my B.A. in Project Management 8 months(June,2015) from now. My intention is to move to the Portland, OR area to work in project management.
My tenure with the Coast Guard, I have ran maintenance projects on our helicopters, put teams together to ensure the projects get completed in a safe and efficient manner. I have also ran shifts.
I have heard from some people that it's difficult to get into project management with little to no experience. But to get experience, you need to get a job.

My questions:
1) Does military experience, specifically running maintenance projects count towards getting my foot in the door?
2) Is prior service(Coast Guard) highly desirable, or does it not matter at all to hiring managers?
3) Other than my degree and managing projects within the Coast Guard, what are some other things that I can do to better prepare myself to land a job once I get released from active duty?

I want to do whatever it takes to better myself and get prepared for my next career in project management. I have really enjoyed the classes I've taken in college and I believe this is the future career for me.

I would love to hear similar stories like mine, military to project management etc.

Thank you for sharing any advice and guidance.

Future In Project management

The best way to get a foot in the project management door will be to ensure there is a strong balance between project management skills and technical skills.

Your Coast Guard background should not be a determining factor as essentially projects are undertaken in all sectors and across all industries. As long as you can demonstrate key project focused skills and delivery of projects.

To best prepare yourself ensure that your skill sets are developed to managing the various knowledge areas of a project, starting from the time/cost/quality priority constraint and working out towards the other aspects (resource, scope, people, risk, stakeholders, procurement etc)
